The Census of Government Employees is a regular programme undertaken by the Directorate of Economics & Statistics (DES) at the state level since 1972. The most recent census was conducted in 2022, marking the fifteenth publication in the series. In this round, DES also included employees working in PSUs, agencies, banks, registered societies, and various state government projects.
The objective of the census is to assess employment levels in state government departments/offices and provide analysis based on sex, caste/tribe, educational qualifications, post type (technical/non-technical), urban-rural location, and other related attributes.
The DES, in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), conducted the 2022 Census using the employee database from the Directorate of Accounts & Treasuries as the primary reference. Departments were required to update any unavailable data.
